The Hobby Horse

Well, it’s been a bit. Life’s busy as ever. I’ve found a real world job again and I’ve been getting stuff done around the house preparing to be back in the office five days a week. I’ve also been working on some stuff around the hobby desk as well, which there’s some fun stuff to share this week. I’m excited to go back to work, but I’m also very excited to be getting not one, but two hobby projects wrapped up sooner than later.

The first thing to share is that I’ve almost finished another terrain piece for NeoNagoya. I’ve got a pair of Brutal Cities’ Trapper Biotech buildings that I’ve stacked up and put a string of LEDs through for some interior lighting. The translucent plastic used for the exterior cladding over sections of the buildings are going to make for some really interesting lighting on the table. I’m to the point where I just need to do some interior clean up and detailing, then glue everything together and do some weathering. I even fired up the printer over the weekend to get some greeblies and detail stuff printed.

Which brings me to the next thing I’m excited about in the hobby side of things. I changed resins for my 3d printer for the first time in like 5 years. I’ve more or less always used Elegoo Standard Grey once I got it dialed in for the printers I’ve been using. But I got tired of how brittle it could be with fine detail stuff or longer weapons and such. So, I did some looking around online and found Phrozen RPG. I ordered it, got it tuned to the printer, and I’m really happy with the results. I had some failures on the first run, but I’m pretty sure it was a case of bad bed-leveling, so I know what to fix before running the next print. Which is probably going to be soon. There’s some great stuff coming out of Anvil Industry this month that makes my weeb heart happy!

Which is another great transition into the next thing I’ve been working on. I’ve had some models for the Order of the Palm from the Terran Reclamation on my desk for like 2 months now and just haven’t been able to find the motivation to finish them. Well, I took a run at them today, and I’m pretty close to finished with them. They look rough, and I’m not happy with them. Mostly because the color choices I made don’t work very well, but I have some ideas for how to fix them. That’s a tomorrow problem, though. I’m happy to have them much closer to finished than they were when I picked them up this morning.

This is my last week before I’m going back into the office, so I’m hoping to get more of the stuff cleared off my hobby desk and to get some more space cleaned up in the hobby office where the printers are. I think there’s also a game on the agenda for tomorrow’s weekly meeting. Lots to do, and it’s nice to feel like I have some motivation back.
