Outside Perspective
So, I know it’s likely a weird thing, a guy running a game company going and talking about someone else’s game. But, I’ve been feeling stagnant in my gaming journey for a while, and I’ve been struggling to write fiction or even any new rules that felt interesting and worthwhile for a bit now, so I’ve decided to start exploring new games and media. I’m reading more fiction again, and probably more importantly to this writing, playing new games. Over the last month, I’ve gotten started down the Turnip28 rabbit-hole, and what a trip it is!
Turnip28’s setting and lore are wild. Completely unhinged weirdness and I love it. It’s not very serious, but it doesn’t have to be. That’s something I really need to remember as I’m trying to write fluff and fiction for S.E.E.R. Yes, I want the writing to be good. I want the characters to be engaging and fun to read about. But I also, more importantly, should remember that this is a game, and it’s supposed to be fun. Because, just like Turnip28, S.E.E.R.’s gameplay mechanics and being able and encouraged to kitbash and scratch build models are the big draw. Being able to show up with some buddies and slap down whatever weird, off the wall things you’ve all decided to bring to the table and have your favorite toy soldiers beat up their toy soldiers.
So, if you’re in the market for a new game to try, I suggest looking into Turnip28. The game is fun, the rules are free, there are free STLs if you have a printer, and the community around the game is fun too. It’s a small-ish army scale 28mm Napoleonic/body-horror game in a completely bonkers eldritch horror setting, and it’s loads of fun.
Also, if you’re into cyberpunk, I recommend going back and reading some of the classics. I’m currently reading Count Zero by William Gibson.
